Who Am I?
I always find it difficult to put into words exactly what makes me who I am, but I figure that most people probably suffer from the same annoyance. In short I often refer to myself as a computer geek. Having said that I am a geek, I need to clarify what I deem the meaning of geek to be, as compared to what your preconceived conceptions of the word geek might be.
Most people think that the words, geek and nerd are interchangeable. I do not believe this to be the case. The word “nerd” to me brings to mind someone sitting in front of a computer, with square shaped glasses, a bowl haircut, an overbite, a t-shirt tucked into some severely pulled up pants and typically some kind of social akwardness. But the word “geek” defines a different kind of person, someone who although very interested in a specific topic, is able to maintain a higher social status then their fellow nerds.
Now that I have clarified that I will go into a little more detail about myself, for those of you who where happy with the “Computer Geek” part I wouldn’t bother reading any further, it isn’t going to get that much better. I currently find myself employed as an Senior Analyst Programmer in Australia. I also find myself a part-time student, currently doing a Computer Science degree. These two things take up quite a portion of my time and I look forward to finishing study soon.
Looking at what I do in a typical week I would describe my activities as lazy. I enjoy computer games and have what my wife would describe as a huge amount of patience, which is wife talk for I wish you would stop playing games and give me more attention. I often find myself feeling very bored, but usually settle for watching one of the many Pixar films that are strewn throughout our DVD collection. I have been diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, which actually came as a bit of a relief. I hope in the next few years to start my own family and yet I can’t stop thinking every time I read the news headlines do I really want bring another person into a world that seems so cruel to so many.
